The Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN) continues impressive passenger growth during the first half of the calendar year, positioning the airport for a robust year-end finish. Over 119,910 passengers traveled through the airport in July (arriving and departing), putting JAN on track to achieve new milestones in 2023. July represents one of the busiest months in over a decade.
Despite early summer challenges such as higher-than-usual weather cancellations, JMAA is forecasting 1.31 million passengers for the year. Customer demand remains strong, with business travelers returning to the skies and leisure travel showing remarkable resilience. Last year, JAN hosted over 1.22 million travelers for the year.
JAN’s passenger numbers are 18.6% above pre-COVID 2019 performance. The first seven (7) months of 2023 is 7.2% over the same period in 2022. JMAA’s parking revenue reflects these substantial passenger numbers, achieving another near record month exceeding $795,000.
Market share among the airlines serving JAN remains competitive, with Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines carrying 31.9%, 31.0%, 29.8%, and 7.3% of the passengers, respectively, from January to July 2023.
JAN continues to be a key player in Mississippi cargo operations, handling over 11.9 million pounds of total cargo year-to-date, a nearly 2% increase over the same period in 2022. The current trend has JAN on track to surpass 22 million pounds this calendar year.
“Our dedication to passenger satisfaction and operational excellence has positioned JAN for a successful year ahead,” said Chief Executive Officer Rosa Beckett. “As these numbers continue to rise, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. We are proud to have recently been listed among the top 10 domestic U.S. airports by Travel and Leisure magazine.”
JMAA strongly encourages passengers to arrive at least two (2) hours before flight departures to allow time for parking and an opportunity to grab a bite to eat or pick up last-minute travel essentials on both the East and West Concourses.
